Writing center visits

October , 2012

Today I went into the writing center to work on my water and toxcity reader response. I started off by picking a stance and using the information in the arictle to prove my stance. The author made good points and used sound information in the study. The biggest problem I had with doing the paper was getting it onto my blogspace. For some reason it wouldn't paste correctly on my page. I got the tutor to help me out and correct my grammar errors and to get it onto my page.

Today in the writing center Ms. Kelly helped me with finding and putting my sources in the right order in MLA format. She was very nice and more than willing to help me understand the material better to better understand to cite my sources for my research paper on gas prices. What I didn't understand was in which order to put my sources in and I kept repeating the authors of the articles I used name. She explained that I didn’t need to do that and that all I needed was the title and date of when the article was written and the authors name once in the beginning of the citation.

Today I visited ms. Kelly in her office for help on doing my bibliograhy and doing the analzying paragraph. she told me that I should read the source carefully before writing the paragraph and It shouldn't really be a summary. I went back to the writing lab to finish the rest of the sources but before I left I had questions on which sources were sholarly and which wern't. She showed me that most articles from data bases were scholarly.

While drafting my outline I was having trouble finding out what to talk about. I had still not found a strong base or formed my thesis all the way by time I got to my outline. I went to the writing center to think about my topic and to do more research to get started on my outline. I found articles on solutions to fixing gas prices and more analytical material that just talked about how high they are. I used the time in the lab to finish writing my outline. I went to Ms. Kelly’s website on moodle to get the outline for the outline so I could put it in the proper order.

December 3, 2012

I took the time in the writing center to write my first body paragraph. It was about how the free market determines the price of gas. I was having trouble so I visited the tutor for help. What I did wrong was that I started off the body with a quote and what I was writing didn’t flow well with the quotes I was using almost like I didn’t understand what I was writing about. I used the remaining time to finish it because I had class right after I left the lab.

I took the time to visit the lab to get started on my second body paragraph. My second paragraph was over how we shouldn’t blame government about gas prices. I didn’t sandwich the material properly like I was supposed to. The tutor told me to past a quote then write around it by analyzing it and using it to strengthen your points just like Mrs. Kelly told us in class. I’m happy I came to see the tutor today I was really confused on how to write my paper.

One of the tutors came in the lab today and helped me out with doing my research paper. He helped me get my intro to flow better and for my points to make more sense. He helped me a lot by showing me how to pick an audience and really get to their hearts. Before I didn’t really know what I was doing or what my point was. I was writing down facts that I really didn’t know what they meant and I really didn’t do that hard of research for my paper so I was lost. The tutor really helped be find myself in this assignment.

December 14, 2012 (2 hours)

We went over my first body paragraph. It flowed a lot better because I redid my thesis. At first m thesis didn’t really make sense because I didn’t understand what I was writing about. I tried using prior knowledge but I should have used my research to help write it. The tutor was really please with my writing and agreed and thought my redone thesis was perfect and that it made perfect sense. Oil companies are the culprit with it comes to gas prices.

After I learned more into what I was writing it was so much easier to write. I found out the root of my issue that I’m writing about and then I went with it. I chose to really focus on oil companies and politicians who give them tax breaks and lie to the people just to get votes when they know that what they are telling the American people are wrong. The tutor agreed with my points and even went on about how much he thought oil companies were to blame for the high prices of gas also.

I went back for the last time to the tutor for help with the finishing of my paper I spent up to 3 hours with him this time. I used this time to finish my paper and to post it to my blog. We read over all 8 pages of my research paper. I used the time to correct any mistakes I had and in the last body paragraph I used another source about Obama and the failed solar power company solyndra because it showed that politicians only have limited power when dealing with issues with the price of gas

He helped me cite the information in my paper toward the end. It was showing that I didn’t know what I was doing when it came to placing the information inside my writing. We looked up the different ways to cite the information when it is more than four lines. I was putting quotation marks where they weren’t supposed to go and making sentences where they weren’t supposed to be. I learned that you put the author’s name inside parenthesis but you leave their name outside the sentence.

For my last entry in the writing lab the tutor and I read my paper fixed my citations and then wrapped up my conclusion. We went through to fix any and all errors and I made excellent points following up my thesis by stating it and analyzing why oil companies aren’t in their customers best interest. I Really enjoyed my time with the tutor he did a great job in stimulating my mind for new ideas to put more into my writing. I’m happy I took advantage of the opportunity to visit him in class Thursday and also in the computer lab.
